At the Paris 2024 Paralympics, 30-year-old Ajeet Singh Yadav brought home a silver medal in the men’s F46 javelin throw, marking a significant milestone in his athletic career. His remarkable achievement is not only a testament to his skill but also a poignant reminder of the incredible journey he has undertaken.
A Heartfelt Memory
As Ajeet Singh Yadav celebrated his success, his friend Anshuman Singh reflected on a fateful winter morning from seven years ago. On December 4, 2017, a tragic accident changed the course of Ajeet’s life. At the age of 23, while working as a research assistant at Laxmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) in Gwalior, Ajeet and Anshuman were returning from a wedding in Jabalpur.
During their journey back, the Kamayani Express stopped at Maihar station. The two friends got off the train to fetch water, but as the train started moving, Ajeet, who was quick to board, grabbed Anshuman. Unfortunately, they both fell from the train, and Ajeet’s left arm came under the wheels as he tried to save his friend.
Anshuman remembers the incident vividly. “Ajeet sir tried to save me, but as he held onto me, he lost his balance, and we both fell. He ended up with his arm under the train wheels. We went through several hospitals before receiving proper treatment in Jabalpur. Whenever I mention how Ajeet sir saved my life, he asks me not to speak of it and just hugs me. Now, with his silver medal, it’s my turn to hug him,” Anshuman recalls.
From Setbacks to Success
Before the accident, Ajeet was an accomplished athlete. He was pursuing his bachelor’s degree at LNIPE and had already made impressive throws exceeding 63 meters in inter-university meets. The accident, however, forced him to restart his training. With the support of his college senior and friend, Dr. Rakesh Kumar Yadav, now an Assistant Professor at JNU, Ajeet returned to the sport with renewed determination.
His perseverance paid off at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Despite the challenges, Ajeet clinched a silver medal with a personal best throw of 65.62 meters on his fifth attempt. He edged out his teammate Sundar Singh Gurjar to secure this prestigious accolade.
Celebrations Back Home
Back in his village of Nagla Vidhi in Samho, Bharthana block, Etawah, Ajeet’s family is beaming with pride. His brother Anshu Kumar Yadav and parents Subash Chand Yadav and Pushpa Devi are eagerly awaiting his return from Paris. “He loves anchoring functions and always dresses well. Maybe, he will host his own felicitation functions too,” says Anshu Kumar Yadav.
Ajeet Singh Yadav’s journey from a tragic accident to winning a silver medal is a powerful story of resilience and determination. His achievement at the Paris 2024 Paralympics not only highlights his athletic prowess but also serves as an inspiring testament to the strength of the human spirit. As he returns home to celebrate this significant victory, Ajeet’s story continues to inspire many, reminding us all that with perseverance, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome.
