Thulasimathi Murugesan Shines with Silver at Paris 2024 Paralympics

Thulasimathi Murugesan, a 22-year-old para-badminton sensation from Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, has added yet another milestone to her growing list of accomplishments. At the Paris 2024 Paralympics, she claimed the silver medal in the Women’s Badminton SU5 category, capping off an incredible run in the tournament. As the top seed, Thulasimathi faced fierce competition in the finals, where she went up against China’s Yang Qiu Xia. Despite her best efforts, Thulasimathi had to settle for silver after a challenging 30-minute match, with a score of 21-17, 21-10.

Early Life and Overcoming Challenges

Born on April 11, 2002, Thulasimathi’s journey into the world of sports began at a young age. By the time she was five years old, she was already participating in athletics, and by the age of seven, she had ventured into badminton. However, her path to success was far from easy.

Thulasimathi was born with a congenital deformity in her left hand, which included the loss of her thumb and the development of chronic ulnar neuritis. This condition caused muscle atrophy and limited mobility, making it difficult for her to use her left hand. To add to her challenges, a serious accident further impaired her hand’s movement, restricting both extension and flexion. Yet, none of these obstacles could deter her spirit.

With unwavering support from her father, D. Murugesan, Thulasimathi’s journey into parasports took flight. Her father dedicated five years to training her, laying the foundation for her future success. His guidance proved pivotal in transforming Thulasimathi’s passion for sports into an illustrious career.

Career Achievements and Highlights

Thulasimathi’s hard work, resilience, and sheer determination have earned her a place among India’s elite para-badminton players. Her silver medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics is just the latest achievement in a long list of accolades she has collected over the years. She has made a name for herself on the international stage, inspiring many with her story of perseverance.

Her journey is a testament to overcoming adversity and achieving greatness, proving that with passion and dedication, even the most significant challenges can be conquered. As she continues to rise in the world of para-badminton, Thulasimathi Murugesan is a shining example of what is possible when one dares to dream big.
