Manu Bhaker Makes Olympic History with Double Medal Win

In a landmark moment for Indian sports, Manu Bhaker made history by becoming the first Indian athlete in the post-independence era to win two Olympic medals in a single edition of the Games. Partnering with the equally composed Sarabjot Singh, Bhaker secured a bronze medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event on Tuesday, adding to her earlier success in the women’s event.

Breaking New Ground in Olympic Shooting

The Indian duo triumphed over the Korean team of Lee Wonoho and Oh Yeh Jin with a score of 16-10 at Chateauroux’s shooting range. This victory marked India’s second medal in the event, cementing Bhaker’s and Singh’s status as standout performers of the competition.

From Setback to Success

Manu Bhaker’s journey to this point has been one of resilience. After a disappointing Olympic debut in Tokyo 2020, the 22-year-old shooter redeemed herself by winning a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event earlier in the Games. This latest bronze in the mixed team event further solidified her comeback and showcased her determination.

Before Bhaker, British-Indian athlete Norman Pritchard had won two silver medals at the 1900 Olympics, but that was during the pre-independence era. Bhaker’s achievement thus holds significant importance for contemporary India.

Sarabjot Singh’s Redemption

For Sarabjot Singh, this medal was a sweet redemption. After narrowly missing out on the men’s 10m air pistol final, finishing ninth with a score of 577, Singh faced immense pressure to deliver in the mixed team event. His performance alongside Bhaker demonstrated his ability to overcome setbacks and rise to the occasion.

“I’m feeling good, the game was very tough, and there was a lot of pressure. I am very happy,” said the 22-year-old Singh, expressing his relief and satisfaction after their victory.

A Contest of Grit and Composure

The match started unfavorably for the Indian pair, with Sarabjot’s first shot scoring a low 8.6 and Bhaker shooting 10.2, giving them a combined score of 18.8. The Korean team took the opening round with a score of 20.5, gaining a 2-0 lead.

In the 10m air pistol mixed team format, the first pair to reach 16 points wins. Despite the early setback, Bhaker’s consistent shooting and Sarabjot’s resilience turned the tide in India’s favor. The Indian pair took the next four rounds, bringing their score to 8-2. Bhaker’s precision, with only three shots below 10 throughout the 13-round contest, was crucial to their success.

Under pressure, the Korean team faltered, and Bhaker and Singh maintained their composure to clinch the victory with a final score of 16-10.

A Moment of Pride for India

“I’m feeling really proud and there is a lot of gratitude, thanks for all the blessings,” said Bhaker post-match. Reflecting on their strategy, she added, “We can’t control what the rivals will do. We can do what is in our hand. Me and my partner thought, let’s just try our best and keep fighting till the end.”

This historic win by Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh is not only a milestone for Indian sports but also an inspiring story of perseverance and teamwork. Their success embodies the Olympic spirit and serves as a beacon of hope for future athletes.
