Yogesh Kathuniya achieved a remarkable feat by winning a silver medal in the Men’s Para Discus Throw F56 event at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Competing in a category for athletes with limb deficiencies or impaired movement, the 27-year-old threw a season-best 42.22 meters. This is his second consecutive Paralympic medal, following his silver at Tokyo 2020.
Overcoming Challenges
Yogesh’s journey to the top was filled with challenges. Born on March 3, 1997, in Bahadurgarh, Haryana, he was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome at the age of 9. The illness severely affected his mobility, but with the help of his mother, Meena Devi, who learned physiotherapy techniques, Yogesh regained the ability to walk by the age of 12.
After completing his education at Indian Army Public School in Chandigarh, he attended Kirori Mal College in Delhi. It was there that he discovered para sports, inspired by videos of para-athletes. His commitment to the sport paid off quickly—by 2018, he set a world record with a discus throw of 45.18 meters at the World Para Athletics European Championships in Berlin.
Achievements and Growth
Since then, Yogesh has consistently excelled. His silver medal at Tokyo 2020, with a throw of 44.38 meters, solidified his place as one of the best para-athletes in the world. He continued his winning streak by securing a silver medal at the 2022 Asian Para Games and another silver at the 2023 World Para Athletics Championship. He has also won multiple gold medals at the Indian Open in 2019, 2022, and 2023.
His most recent accomplishment at Paris 2024 once again proves his dedication and skill.
Inspiration for the Future
Yogesh Kathuniya’s story is an inspiring example of resilience and hard work. From overcoming a life-changing illness to winning medals on the global stage, his journey motivates others to push past obstacles and aim for greatness. His legacy as a leading figure in para-discuss throw will continue to inspire future generations.
With his silver medal from Paris 2024 and numerous other accolades, Yogesh Kathuniya remains one of India’s brightest para-athletes.
