The long-awaited Dharavi Redevelopment Project is set to begin construction within the next 6-8 months, marking a significant milestone for Mumbai. The project aims to transform nearly 600 acres of land in the heart of the city. The redevelopment will focus on 296 acres, as the remaining land includes open spaces like Mahim Nature Park and Koliwadas.
Strategic Vision and Planning
Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd (DRPPL), a joint venture between the Adani Group and the Government of Maharashtra, is spearheading this transformation. The project’s master plan, currently under preparation, includes layouts for township planning and infrastructure development. International city and infrastructure planning experts from firms like Sasaki, Buro Happold, and renowned architect Hafeez Contractor, alongside experts from Singapore, are contributing to this massive endeavor.
Relocation and Rehabilitation
To ensure a smooth transition, DRPPL has requested 540 acres across Mumbai for relocating ineligible residents from Dharavi. An ongoing survey to determine eligibility for rehabilitation will be completed by March. This survey, which has already covered over 10,000 tenements, will establish the criteria for rehabilitation under the project.
Economic and Social Impact
Dharavi, home to over 850,000 residents, with its population surpassing 1 million when considering its transient population, is the most overcrowded zone in Mumbai. Despite its challenges, Dharavi is a hub of cultural diversity, housing over 85 communities. It is also a center for informal industries like leather and pottery, providing employment to over one lakh individuals.
The state’s vision for Dharavi includes transforming the area into a cluster of high-rise structures with enhanced urban infrastructure. The plan also includes industrial and business zones for existing and new businesses, offering better facilities and infrastructure. This transformation will reduce residential differentiation within Mumbai and integrate Dharavi’s residents with the broader city population.
